The Stranger I Had Dinner With Through a Screen
This sounds ridiculous, but I matched a girl and we ended up eating dinner together through our webcams. It was the most domestic, unexpectedly lovely session I’ve ever had.
She had a bowl of noodles and I was eating a sad sandwich. She looked at my sandwich, then said “that looks like it was made by someone who has given up.” I laughed and said it absolutely was.
“Okay,” she said, “here’s the deal. We eat our sad dinners together and we make it weird, or we make it fun. Your choice.” So we did. She showed me her noodles, I showed her my sandwich, and we spent the next half hour pretending we were at a fancy restaurant, critiquing each other’s food with ridiculous fake accents.
Somewhere in there it stopped being a joke. We talked about real stuff, our week, things that were bothering us, and it felt completely natural. Two strangers sharing a quiet meal through a screen turned into one of the most comforting conversations I’ve had in months.
Before we said bye, she said “thanks for dinner, best date I’ve had all year.” I said “me too.” And we both laughed because it was true, in the weirdest possible way.
It taught me that the connections that matter on random chat aren’t always the spicy ones, and the honest sessions are the ones you remember long after.
